  Question & Answer

Who are your favorite fighters?

Bruce Lee & Muhammad Ali

What was the turning point for you to get into fighting?

As soon as I finished college volleyball, I missed competition in my life, so I jumped right into fighting.  For the entire story, see my bio at www.elainamaxwell.com

Has your fighting style evolved over the years or have you stuck with a specific style throughout?

It has definitely evolved.  I’ve been fighting for 10 years, so in order for me to survive in the fight game, evolution is necessary (survival of the fittest).

So what is your main strength when it comes to fighting?
Although I am working towards my purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, most people would think my strengths reside in stand up; I would have to agree :-)

What do you like most about being a fighter?

I get to make $ doing something that I love!

Have you ever knocked out someone? Describe your first KO.  How did it feel?

Yes, I knocked out my opponent in my first MMA fight in 2006.  It was more of a TKO stoppage because she wasn’t knocked out cold.  However, the referee stopped the fight.  It was exhilarating!  I have other TKO’s in kickboxing, but my MMA TKO was much more memorable.

What are some standout moments for you as a fighter?

I have received numerous titles in San Shou kickboxing and several medals in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  However, my most memorable to date is when I defeated Poland in the World Wushu Games in Macau, China in 2003.  It is a world San Shou tournament where all countries of the world are allowed to compete, and I was the first American ever to bring the gold home to the USA.  I didn’t know its importance at the time, but I soon learned after some time went by in the states.  To date, I am still the only gold medalist from the USA.

Going into each fight do you have a specific approach, or do you tailor your training according to your opponent?

No, I don’t tailor my training to my opponent; I work on my weaknesses while perfecting my strengths.

Is there anyone in particular you would like to thank? Anything else you wish to say?

I would like to thank my parents for all they have done for me, including my two sisters – Ila and Christina.  Thank you for always supporting me! Check out Strikeforce on June 27th at the HP in San Jose, CA; my fight will be fight of the night!
